Luke Shaw: Rooney slams Man Utd star with ‘schoolboy’ verdict
Wayne Rooney singles out Luke Shaw after Man Utd’s Hull defeat, calling his defending ‘schoolboy’ stuff.
Wayne Rooney has slammed the sloppy defending at Man United, according to the latest news. He criticised a costly error from Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes’ comments after a 2-0 loss to Hull City.
Rooney slams Luke Shaw for ‘schoolboy’ error in Hull defeat
Wayne Rooney was blunt in his assessment on Match of the Day. As reported by GOAL, he was frustrated with Luke Shaw’s role in Hull’s second goal. Rooney said Shaw dropped five yards behind his own back line. This let the whole Hull front line stay onside as the ball arrived. He called it “schoolboy defending,” and said that once the ball came in, there was no way to stop it.
“Man United had a good line, Hull would have been waiting for this all day,” Rooney said. “Luke Shaw drops in, he’s five yards behind his back line and if the ball is good enough, which it was, it’s impossible to stop.” Rooney felt Hull had prepared well for exactly that kind of ball into the penalty area. They kept sending balls into the box to win the loose second balls.
Shaw’s stats in the 2025-26 season at Man United, as per FOTMOB:
| Competition | Matches | Goals | Assists | Chances created | Defensive contributions |
| Premier League | 38 | 1 | 1 | 16 | 224 |
United’s tactical approach comes under fire
Rooney also questioned how flat Manchester United looked for most of the match. He said Carrick’s side managed just two balls in Hull’s final third, exposing their lack of pressing energy. Rooney felt Hull had set up like a team he saw AC Milan face the previous week. They used wing backs to stretch United’s back line and pull defenders out of position.
That approach, Rooney felt, denied United time on the ball out wide and cost them control of the game. He thought Hull had watched that same match and copied the approach, which caught United’s players cold early. For a side that usually controls games, this kind of football looked sluggish and disjointed throughout.
“They sat in a mid block, didn’t get any pressure on the ball,” Rooney explained. “I think they won two balls in Hull’s final third, there needs to be more energy in the press. Today was all too passive.” The message was blunt, United must close down opponents faster, or performances like this will keep repeating.

Fernandes’ comments spark fresh debate
Bruno Fernandes’ post-match remarks did not sit well with Rooney either. The United captain had said his side kept making the same mistakes in away games, but Rooney pushed back on that read. As reported by GOAL, Rooney said: “It’s a strange quote from Bruno. I think for Manchester United now to build on what they did last season, since Michael went in they finished third in the Premier League and got Champions League football,” Rooney continued. “To build on that you have to become a team who teams are scared of playing against.” That finish showed real progress under Carrick, and Rooney’s point was that United cannot afford to slip back into old away-day habits now.
How Carrick responds to this defeat could define the shape of United’s season. His side returns to Old Trafford next for their first home game of the new campaign, and it arrives at a pointed moment. Carrick will need to fix both the defensive lapses around Shaw’s positioning and the lack of pressing intensity that Rooney flagged, or these problems could resurface at home.
