Toby Collyer in talks over Man Utd exit as West Brom move arises
Toby Collyer is in talks to join West Brom from Man United
West Bromwich Albion are in talks with Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer over a possible permanent return. The 22-year-old has featured during pre-season but was expected to leave Old Trafford this summer. Talks remain at an early stage, with West Brom now exploring a deal for the midfielder.
West Brom explore permanent Collyer return
As reported by BBC Sport, Collyer has been involved with the main squad for pre-season and was brought on in the second half of United’s draw with Leeds at Croke Park. The midfielder came on because Mason Mount was unavailable through injury. However, United have expected Collyer to leave the club for most of the summer.
West Brom are now discussing a permanent move for the midfielder, although negotiations have not progressed far.
A return could give Collyer regular first-team football after struggling for game time at United.
Collyer’s difficult loan spells
As reported by AOL, Collyer spent the first half of last season on loan at West Brom, making 12 appearances, including three starts. He returned to Manchester United in January before later joining Hull City after recovering from a calf injury. His spell at Hull was disrupted by fitness issues, limiting him to just five appearances.
Collyer has therefore found it difficult to build momentum over the past year. A permanent move could now provide him with greater stability and an opportunity to play more regularly. The move could be important for Collyer at this stage of his career. At 22, he needs regular minutes to build confidence and show he can perform consistently at senior level. His previous spells at West Brom and Hull were disrupted by injuries, making continuity particularly important.
A permanent return to West Brom could give him a familiar environment. It will also allow the club to assess him over a longer period. The midfielder already knows what to expect at The Hawthorns, which could help him settle in quickly if the move goes through and make an immediate impact

Hull interest fades as West Brom move emerges
Hull City were reportedly interested in bringing Collyer back after earning promotion to the Premier League, but a deal is yet to materialize. That has opened the door for West Brom to explore a permanent transfer. The club already know Collyer well from his previous loan spell. This could help them assess whether he can become a regular contributor.
For Manchester United, moving Collyer on would give Carrick more depth in midfield while allowing the club to focus on players who feature more prominently in his plans. Collyer’s departure would not necessarily close the door on his future at Old Trafford, but it could give him regular football and the chance to build confidence and develop away from the pressure of competing for places at United.
West Brom must now decide whether to turn the early talks into a formal offer. Discussions remain at an early stage, but the situation could move quickly if the Championship side decide to push ahead with a permanent deal. For Collyer, a move could provide the regular minutes he needs to continue his development.
