The 8 teams that emerge victorious in this phase proceed to join the top 8 clubs from league phase to play in the round of 16. After the round of 16, the knockout format is in effect where teams play 2 legs, one at home and one away in the Quarter-finals and Semi-finals. This is followed by the final that is played at a venue decided before the competition starts.
The UEFA Champions League standings play an important role during the league stage of the competition. A team earns +3 points for a win and +1 point for a draw.
