Carlos Baleba joins Man Utd as £70m deal confirmed
Manchester United finally land Carlos Baleba for £70m, closing a transfer saga that started over a year ago and reshaping their midfield just days after a shock opening day loss.
Man United have officially completed the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba, as per latest transfer news. The player leaves Brighton and Hove Albion in a deal that could reach £70 million.
The Carlos Baleba Deal Took Years in the Making
Man United’s interest in Baleba was never a secret, but the numbers involved made this one of the trickiest deals of the summer. The club have paid £65m excluding £5m in add-ons, taking the total package to £70m, as reported by BBC. Brighton also managed to secure a sell-on clause.
This means they stand to benefit again if United decide to sell him further down the line. This arrangement gives both clubs something to smile about, even if United fans might wince at the price tag. The deal has been finalised for an initial fee of £65m which has the potential to rise by a further £5m to take the overall value of the transfer to £70m.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, he said, “It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.” He also spoke about working under Michael Carrick, adding, “I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.”
United had touched base with the Seagulls about a move before, knowing the chances of a deal were slim. But, they wanted to show their interest was genuine. Brighton’s asking price once sat well above £100 million. That gap looked impossible to close for a long time.
Baleba’s 2025/26 stats for club & country, as per FOTMOB:
| Competitions | Matches | Defensive Contributions | Duels Won(%) | Recoveries |
| Premier League | 31 | 209 | 50% | 105 |
| FA Cup | 1 | 2 | 75% | 3 |
| EFL Cup | 3 | 14 | 52% | 3 |
| AFCON | 5 | 17 | 64% | 13 |
Why United Pushed So Hard For Baleba
The timing of this deal says a lot about United’s thinking. Just days before the announcement, the club suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat away to Hull City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. It was a result that exposed familiar issues in the middle of the park.
Now, Baleba becomes Man Utd’s third midfield addition of the summer after Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Both players made their debuts during that Hull defeat, and their struggles appear to have accelerated the push to bring in extra options.

What Comes Next For The Midfielder
Baleba has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for a further twelve months. This gives Man Utd long-term security over their investment. However, Baleba picked up an ankle injury during Brighton’s pre-season training camp in Austria. So United will need patience before he can make his debut.
This move takes United’s summer spending to £153 million. This is a clear sign of intent as they prepare to return to Champions League football for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign. Whether Baleba can settle quickly and lift a struggling midfield remains the big question heading into this season.
